Over a period of less than four years, the Apollo missions gathered large quantities of data, samples and a new insight into the nature of the Moon.

Unfortunately, after the euphoria of 1969, public interest waned to the point where tv stations were receiving complaints that the Apollo 17 coverage was interrupting repeats of "I Love Lucy." The project was cancelled and the remaining planned missions abandoned.
