The Apollo missions were undeniably the most ambitious space project ever undertaken. Using the Saturn V rocket - a vehicle the size of a cathedral built to the tolerances of a microscope - they culminated when Neil Armstrong alighted on the lunar surface with the historic words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for Mankind."

To date, only eleven other men have walked on the Moon.
