from Tim Smith in Ogdensburg, NJ, USA

Wonderfull site! More infomation than I have encountered elsewhere on the net. I'm returning to star gazing after several year's, and have recently moved into a severely light polluted locale. The Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and a few brighter Messier objects are all I have left to view. I never paid much attention to the Moon under darker skies (came to hate it actually), but your site has helped renew my interest, as well as providing all the basics to make observing easy and fun. Astounding effort! Thanks again.

In this order, it is GOD , the MOON, and music that make me so very happy. I got up this a.m. and the moon was a waning(?) MOON ,absolutely beautiful... I started my morning out blessed and the visual effect of the MOON has made me happy all day. I came to your website by accident to only be nurished with the music of Carlos Santana's version of Gato Barberi's Europa! My all time favorite piece of music. Thank you for such an informative web site. God bless you and may the MOON and the music always be a bright part of your lives. De Sharpe

Did you know that the reason the Apollo 11 mission failed is due to a leak in fuel and that the igniters lighted too much fuel cuasing it to explode? Also, did you know that if you burped in space without a helmet, the gases from your burp would stay together until entering an atmoshere? Oh,and one more thing, did you know that the sun is only at the very middle of it's 13 stages and that it will explode in about 7.3 million more years?

Plan to visit regularly. I would have my HS astronomy students do likewise but your guests seem to be a bit unruly.

reply: Your visit was unfortunately timed, Bill. Off-topic posts are very unusual here, and rude ones are even rarer (literally months apart). I always remove them promptly, but sadly you came here just a few hours after one such incident (four entries, all within 11 minutes, all from the same town) and before they could be deleted.

An astronomer is essentially, a romantic man and the moon is in many ways the symbol of romanticism;like a woman, it could be inconstant, but always beatiful and plenty of surprises.Once you´re engaged with her you can not to leave it. Your web page helps strongly in this engagement. It is wondeful. Congratulations.

A further comment on the phase calculator...it might be useful to have a "percent illuminated" figure calculated for each day if that is not too much trouble.

This is a really great site for moon fanatics. I only have one gripe and that is - the site keeps freezing up on me. Keep up the good work

reply: My apologies - I have taken the unusual step of removing your book recommendation. I am currently taking legal advice, as large parts of one of the chapters appear to have been lifted almost verbatim from this site without acknowledgement - material which, it can be proved, was available here some three years before the book's publication.

Inconstant Moon deliberately does not use the kinds of techniques which might cause a browser to freeze, but if you could tell me the actions you take immediately before it freezes I will look at the problem.

Thank you for the kind words, and sorry again for editing your comments.

INCONSTANT MOON

Its yielding glow in armoured light
a heavenly ritual blesses now
in glorious renew

Rising through galaxy’s palette
shifting stars echo colours
in renaissance hue

Subtle shadows harbour comfort
and favours not this respite
from solitaire’s curfew

Inconstant moon humble in reproach
as wisdom sought granted hopefully
by fervent few

Holy gaze wrapped in space
distant rumbles compete in mind with
what’s thought true

Candle’s flame no resemblance borne
each night’s foray a prerequisite plan
conveys no clue

A friend and I watched the moon on the 25th of February. The moon had a circle around it with the outside of the circle being red. There was a bright object (similar to an airplane) that would slowly travel from left to right on the outer rim. My friend took pictures (infra-red). There were three three bright circles popping in and out and one large bright green circle. Do you have any idea what that is? This is a great site and I will be using it often. Thanks

Yes, its me again. As I was perusing the music list it struck me that there was a movie "The Moon is Blue"... HOLLYWOOD.COM lists it as produced and directed by Otto Preminger, and as having a song by Sylvia Fine, who was Danny Kaye's wife... Maybe, if it can be located, you would want to add it to the selections?

A truly magnificent site: in completeness not equalled on the net, to my knowledge. Aside from its usefullness as a reference to the moon, it is a thing of beauty and obviously a work of love.

As an old wrinkley (66) who is not for health reasons able to persue my passion for photography I am about to buy a telescope. I will be able to use this on my patio which I can get to reasonably easily. I still would have a digital and 35mm cameras for moon pics etc. I would appreciate any advice?
